About this Research

Three institutions in region have made it a priority to become full-fledged Tier One research institutions and two of them have achieved that designation: The University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Texas at Arlington. University of North Texas, is currently designated as Emerging Research Institution by the state of Texas.
TRA tracks Tier One status of these institutions and works with the chambers to develop research capabilities reports. Through our research we look to find ways to aid the continuing growth of these institutions

What is Tier 1?

There is no official federal system to designate National “tier 1” institutions. However, The Center for Measuring University Performance creates an annual report of the Top American Research Universities that are typically considered nationally “Tier 1” in the higher education field. HB 51 in 2009 established programs to increase the amount of Tier 1 institutions in Texas.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) created this report to detemine the eligibility of public research universities in Texas that are ineligible for funding consideration by the National Research University Fund (NRUF).
Below are policy briefs created by the Dallas Regional Chamber that review Texas’ priority’s, methods, and goals when it comes to advancing the research status of public universities in Texas.
